  • Macbook/Macbook Pro Exam4 taking tips

Although Apple computers are not supported by the Law School, it is possible to use Exam4 using the new Macbook and Macbook Pro computers. Here are a few tips:

  • Remember to log off

Currently our policy is that only law students can use our computer lab but if you leave your account logged in a student or non-student could take advantage of the situation and use your account for nefarious purposes. Imagine if the next time you logged in to check your email and it's all been erased? How about if someone had deleted a paper you had spent weeks and weeks working on, or some nearly completed application? What if they use your account to send threatening emails or make bomb threats, you could be liable!

  • Recommended laptop setup

When you first power on your laptop you will be prompted with a blue welcome screen, select Next, follow the on screen instructions, the default settings should suit most people, click Next. Accept the license agreements from Microsoft, and click Next. Type a name for your computer and an optional description. You will be prompted to select an Administrator password, this step is optional but we strongly suggest that you enter a lengthy, difficult password, but one that you will remember. Check HERE for tips on creating strong passwords.

  • Adjusting power settings to conserve battery life

There are also some settings on the Laptop itself you can adjust to help save more of your battery life. Usually your manufacturer will have a built in power management tool you can access. If not you can access windows power options from the Control Panel, and then click on Power Options.

  • How to lock your computer

Ever leave you're computer unattended? Most people will answer yes to this question. Doing so may be dangerous and leave your personal data available to theft. A solution to this problem is to lock your computer whenever you are away from the keyboard.

  • Creating shortcuts

Follow the instructions above to add a shortcut to your desktop Verify that your taskbar is unlocked Right-Click on the taskbar located at the bottom of the screen Note: Don't click on a program but on a blank area towards the bottom of the screen. Unselect Lock the Taskbar Go back to your desktop Hold and drag the icon you created a shortcut for into the bottom left of your screen Drag it into the quick launch bar where the other icons are located right besides start Now Right-click the taskbar again and selectLock the taskbar This will prevent you from making unwanted changes again Your new icon should now show up in your quick launch bar

  • Creating strong password

Strong passwords don't have to be hard to memorize. Try using the first letter of a phrase. Here's an example: I like 8 eggs for breakfast at University of Utah when John is sleepy Which could become a password like: Il8efb@tUoUwJis
